Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, my curiosity took root among misty trails, tide pools, and evergreen forests. I’ve always been drawn to understanding the world, how people connect, and how communities develop and grow stronger when they listen to one another.
That curiosity has carried me around the world. In my twenties, I moved to Australia for a year with little more than optimism and a backpack. I quickly learned that through hard work, a little risk-taking, and care for others, you can have some incredible experiences, like working for one of the Real Housewives of Melbourne.
After camping for six weeks in Australia, I traveled through Asia and Europe before settling in Scotland to earn my master’s degree at the University of Edinburgh. Along the way, I met people from every walk of life and learned how universal our hopes are — to belong, to contribute, and to feel at home.
Upon my return from Scotland, I landed in Washington, D.C., and started a job at the United States Congress, facilitating an international exchange program for visiting foreign dignitaries. It was there that I discovered how powerful cultural understanding and collaboration can be.
After several years on the East Coast, I found my way to Palm Desert, where I discovered my forever home. This community has a special rhythm, creative, kind, and full of possibilities. I feel lucky every day to work for the City of Palm Desert, an organization that shares my belief in connection and collaboration, helping neighbors and businesses grow together.
Recently, I was also honored to be named one of Palm Springs Life’s 40 Under 40 and to serve as Vice President of Leadership Coachella Valley, where I get to support the next generation of community leaders.
At my core, I’m someone who believes in people, in their stories, their potential, and their power to create meaningful change. The Coachella Valley reminds me of that every day.
Remember, continue exploring, work hard, and live happily.
Best, Ryland
